Researchers from the Centre for Cooperative Research in Biosciences, CIC bioGUNE, and the Centre for Biomedical Network Research into Hepatic and Digestive Diseases, CIBERehd, have discovered that deficiency of a certain gene (GNMT) affects liver regeneration and proliferation, and produces greater susceptibility when the liver is damaged. These findings have been published recently in the prestigious journal Hepatology.

Basque company Progenika has entered into an agreement with the Dutch biotechnology firm Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (AMT) to develop and commercialise the LPLchip, a diagnostic tool to rapidly diagnose patients with complete and partial lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD), which might lead to illnesses like acute pancreatitis. The Progenika product is the only DNAchip in the world that enables identification of patients who might benefit from Glybera, a gene therapy developed by AMT for patients with this disease.

The group for research into Human Melanoma from the University of the Basque Country - UPV/EHU – has identified new tumour markers and is studying new molecules and drugs for therapeutic use against this type of cancer. The progressive increase in the number of cases of skin cancer over the last few years and its resistance to anti-tumour drugs is proving a serious challenge in research into this cancer.

Consignaciones Europeas Marítimas (Cemasa) has resumed its ten-year Norcanarias service between the port of Bilbao and the Canary Islands, which sails between Bilbao, Gijón, Marín, Las Palmas, Tenerife and, every twenty days, Arrecife, on the island of Lanzarote. The vessel, "Flintercoast, which provides the service, is 141 metres long and is capable of carrying 800 TEUs (international unit equivalent to a 20 foot container). The service, operated by TCN (Trasatlántica Compañía Naviera), of which Cemasa is the agent in Bilbao, has been specifically designed for container and conventional cargo.
